Regardless of your camera's capabilities, when all is said and done it will always rely on the image that the lens provides.
SLR's (both digital and film), video cameras and even some digital compact cameras allow you to adapt your camera to get the whole picture with wide-angle lenses (below 50mm), get close to the action with telephoto lenses (above 50mm), and filter out unwanted lighting flares and ghosting.
Just be aware when you are looking at getting a lens that film uses film lenses, and digital uses digital as well as relevant auto-focus film lenses.
But also bear in mind that if using a film lens on a digital SLR the lens power will be multiplied by 1.5 - which is why it can be better sticking with a digital-dedicated lens for wide-angle shots, as they may very well provide an extra 50% telephoto power at a lower price!
